Re: Yonge-Eglinton Growth Centre – Towers Forecast 2015

Dear Councillors:

On behalf of the Federation of North Toronto Residents’ Associations (FoNTRA), we are writing to provide our endorsement of the above document developed by Terry Mills, planner and member of FoNTRA’s Steering Committee. In addition, we are requesting that the document be included on the agendas of your respective Committees (PGMC, PWIC) at the earliest opportunity.

The “Towers Forecast” projects the growth in the Yonge-Eglinton area, looking 20 years ahead, at 60 new towers and an estimated 30,200 more people living within a 1 km. circle. While all new tower applications are considered individually, the cumulative impact resulting from the number and scale of development is not being considered. We strongly recommend that the degree of intensification outlined in the report be verified, which could serve as preparatory work for a Secondary Plan and/or a Development Permit System for the Yonge-Eglinton area.

An urban audit should be undertaken that would consider a comprehensive urban design and the wide range of infrastructure needs for the Yonge-Eglinton area.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
