Re: Congratulations
Dear Mayor Tory:
The Federation of North Toronto Residents’ Associations (FoNTRA) would like to offer our sincere
congratulations to you on your election as Mayor of Toronto, and to express our interest in working
with you on planning issues in the City.
FoNTRA has a 14-year history as an umbrella group for residents’ associations in North Toronto and
North York. Our major focus is at the policy and governance level for both the City of Toronto and
the province, and to provide leadership and assistance to residents’ associations as a fundamental
demonstration of democracy and civic engagement.
We are currently involved in a number of City planning public consultations such as the Official Plan
Reviews of Neighbourhoods, the Environment, and Urban Design as well as Eglinton Connects and
the Local Appeal Body. Our member associations have expressed a concern about the need for
transparency in planning, decision-making and attention to community voices.
Many residents feel that the City of Toronto does an inadequate job at protecting neighbourhoods from
the negative impacts of intrusive, excessive, and undesirable development. We strongly support
directing growth to areas designated by the Official Plan, defending the Official Plan Neighbourhood
polices, and upholding the provisions of the Zoning By-laws.
In addition, FoNTRA has ongoing concerns about the Committee of Adjustment (CofA) process
including inadequate/deficient notices to the public, unfair procedures at the CofA hearings, and the
need for proper defence by City staff at CofA appeal hearings.
Again, congratulations on your election as Mayor of Toronto.
Yours truly,
Geoff Kettel
